What is a meta description?

A meta description is the short snippet of text that appears below your page title in Google search results. While it isn't a direct ranking factor, a well-written meta description significantly improves click-through rate — which does affect your rankings over time.

How long should a meta description be?

Google typically displays between 150 and 160 characters. Descriptions shorter than 120 characters leave space on the table. Descriptions longer than 160 characters get cut off with an ellipsis. This tool flags each result as green (ideal), yellow (short), or red (too long) so you can choose accordingly.
